Infanta Beatriz, Princess of Civitella-Cesi

Today marks the Anniversary of the death of Infanta Beatriz, Princess of Civitella-Cesi, who died on this day in 2002! The elder daughter and third of the six children of of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, Infanta Beatriz. Educated by governesses and tutors, she grew up at the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Palacio de la Magdalena, along with frequent visits to stay with her namesake grandmother, Princess Beatrice, at Kensington Palace. After reaching the age of majority in 1927, Infanta Beatriz began to undertake many official engagements, taking a special interest in nursing, becoming the President of the Red Cross in San Sebastián. In 1931, the Spanish Royal Family went into exile, and Infanta Beatriz stayed in Paris and Lausanne before moving to Rome, where she met and married Don Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince of Civitella-Cesi, an illustrious and wealthy Italian aristocrat, in 1935. The couple had four children and eleven grandchildren, including Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg, residing at the Palazzo Torlonia, remaining close to the Italian and Spanish Royal Families, particularly after the restoration of the monarchy under her nephew, King Juan Carlos, after which Infanta Beatriz frequently returned to Spain, lastly in 2001, the year before she passed away at the Palazzo Torlonia in 2002, at the age of 93, the last surviving child of King Alfonso XIII.
