Today marks the Anniversary of the death of Princess Gina of Liechtenstein, who passed away on this day in 1989! Born Countess Georgine ‘Gina’ von Wilczek, the only child of the Count of Wilczek and Countess Norbertine Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau, she was born in Graz, Austria and grew up in the new Republic of Austria during the inter-war era. In 1943, she married Prince Franz Joseph II of Liechtenstein, the ruler of the Small Principality, and the couple had five children: including the current Prince Hans-Adam II. Princess Gina was the founder and president of the Liechtenstein Red Cross, and was a patron of many other charities. The Prince’s reign, which spanned from 1938 to 1989, saw a period of great change in the Principality and the Princely Family’s fortunes, during which the Princess was at the forefront of promoting Liechtenstein throughout the period. Princess Gina died in Grabs, Switzerland, close to the Liechtenstein border, in October 1989, a month before the Prince.
