Queen Anne Marie’s Sapphire Necklace

Happy Birthday to Queen Anne Marie of Greece, who turns 72 today! The youngest daughter of King Frederik IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden, she married King Constantine II of Greece in 1964. Despite being exiled for more than five decades, as the sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, sister-in-law of Queen Sofia of Spain, cousin of King Carl XVI Gustaf of SwedenKing Harald V of Norway, and the Duke of Edinburgh, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie attend a plethora of glittering events, where she wears pieces from her substantial jewel collection, including this Sapphire Necklace-

Featuring sapphire flowers set in a modern diamond design, this Sapphire Necklace was first notably worn by Queen Anne Marie at the Wedding of Prince Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein in 1967, and may have been a gift from King Constantine to mark the birth of their eldest son, Crown Prince Pavlos that year. The necklace accompanied Queen Anne Marie into exile, and while it is not one of her most worn pieces, the necklace was notably worn for her Silver Anniversary, and continued to be worn into the 1990s.

In 1993, Queen Anne Marie loaned her modern sapphire necklace, and the diamond earrings usually worn with them, to her eldest daughter, Princess Alexia, for King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 25th Anniversary Banquet. The necklace hasn’t been seen in decades, but with Queen Anne Marie’s granddaughter, Princess Olympia starting to attend royal events these days, we may hopefully see this necklace soon.
