Happy Birthday to Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who turns 75 today! The second son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, he was the younger brother of Prince William, and was born the 5th-in-line to the Throne. Prince Richard lived for a few years in Australia, where his father was Governor General, before returning to Britain, and Barnwell Manor, where he grew up. Educated at Wellesley House School and Eton before reading Architecture at Magdalene College, Cambridge, Prince Richard joined the Offices Development Group in the Ministry of Public Building and Works for a year, before he became a practising partner in Hunt Thompson Associates in London. In 1972, he married Danish-born Birgitte van Deurs, becoming the Heir to the Dukedom of Gloucester after the death of his brother soon after, having to give up his career as an architect and taking up duties as a full-time working member of the Royal Family, after succeeding his father in 1974. The Duke and Duchess have three children and resided at Barnwell Manor until 1995, when they moved into an apartment at Kensington Palace. Every year, the Duke carries out a plethora of engagements on behalf of the Queen, with some of his notable patronages include the Construction Youth Trust, being the Founding Chancellor of the University of Worcester, and the Royal Patron of the UK branch of Habitat for Humanity. We wish HRH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!
