Queen Ingrid’s Diamond Pendant

Today marks the Anniversary of the Birth of Queen Ingrid of Denmark, the Swedish Princess who became the beloved Danish Queen and the mother of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. To mark the anniversary, we are taking a look at her Diamond Pendant.

Featuring a large yellow diamond, ringed with pearls, with a small pearl pendant, the Pendant was first seen on then Princess Ingrid, along with the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, in a portait taken to mark her 21st Birthday in 1931, when it was worn suspended from a long string of pearls. She later also wore it for her farewell speech to the Swedish public before she married the Crown Prince of Denmark in 1935. There is no known provenance for the piece, but given its appearance, it is probably a Swedish or British Royal Heirloom.

After Queen Ingrid’s death in 2000, the diamond pendant was inherited by her youngest daughter, Queen Anne Marie of Greece, who has worn it suspended from a three-strand pearl necklace for a variety of important occasions, including Queen Sonja’s 70th Birthday, the Pre-Wedding Gala of the Duke of Cambridge, and King Constantine’s 70th Birthday.

  1. That is a lovely piece! Even though I like it suspended from the three-strand pearl necklace, I prefer it worn with the long strand. It is substantial enough for that and I think it makes more of a statement.
