Queen on the Royal Yacht Britannia, 1972

A series of portraits of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh taken on the Royal Yacht Britannia on this day in 1972, in honour of the Queen and Duke’s Silver Wedding Anniversary that year as they made their way to Mauritius at the end of a long tour of Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Maldives, and the Seychelles. The photographs show the Royal Couple on deck, viewing the ocean, at Dinner, with her Secretary after dinner, and Opening Parliament in Mauritius, for which the Queen wore the Vladimir Tiara.

  1. That wonderful photo of the Queen in sunglasses says it all. No wonder she was moved to tears at the decommissioning of Britannia!

    1. I know! To this day I think that the decommissioning of the Britannia was a mistake. It more than paid for its upkeep in the money it saved in security measures and the goodwill in generated.
