Happy Birthday to Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho of Tonga! Born the Hon. Nanasipauʻu Vaea, she is a daughter of Baron Vaea, a nephew of Queen Sālote who served as Tonga’s Prime Minister from 1991 to 2000, and Baroness Tuputupu Vaea. In 1982, she married Prince ʻAhoʻeitu Tupou, the third son of King Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV and Queen Halaevalu Mataʻaho ʻAhomeʻe, and her second cousin. The couple have three children, Princess Latufuipeka, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, and Prince Ata. In 2012, the couple succeeded his elder brother as King Tupou IV and Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho of Tonga, and were crowned in 2015. The Queen has published a book on the ‘Songs and poems of Queen Salote’, her great-aunt and grandmother-in-law, and has met quite a few Foreign Royals at the Cremation of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and most prominently welcoming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Tonga last year.

  1. I wish Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho much joy! Her great-aunt Queen Salote has always been a favorite of mine. I read where she refused cover from the rain for her carriage during Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, just like all the spectators who were lining the route. That made her extremely popular in Brittan. A few years later she hosted the Queen and Prince Philip, the only other queen in the British Commonwealth. She did a lot for her country!

  2. The current king of Tonga is a 3rd son. The first son, His Late Majesty King Siaosi Tupou V passed with no legitimate heirs.

The second son (The Hon. Ma’atu ) was removed from the line of succession by their father, His late Majesty King Tupou IV, when he married without their father’s permission a beauty queen from Hawaii. When his wife passed, he returned to Tonga and married Hon ‘Alaileula of Samoa, a granddaughter of the late King of Samoa, Malietoa Tanumafili II.
