King Constantine II of Greece (wearing the Order of the Redeemer and the Order of Saints George and Constantine) was accompanied by his sister, Princess Irene (in the Order of Saints Olga and Sophia), as he made his first speech in front of the Greek Parliament at the Old Royal Palace in Athens on this day in 1964, the day after the death of his father, King Paul, and his accession to the Throne. The King reigned till 1967, when a group of colonels overthrew the democratic government, and established a military junta. After King Constantine led a failed counter-coup later that year, the Royal Family were forced to flee to Rome. In 1973, a referendum abolished the Monarchy, and the King lived in exile until 2012, when he returned to live in Greece as a private citizen.
