British State Visit to Thailand, 1972

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by Princess Anne, were hosted by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Queen Sirikit, the the extended Thai Royal Family during their State Visit to Thailand, which started on this day in 1972. This was the first leg of a long Tour, which was followed by State Visits to Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Maldives, the Seychelles, Mauritius and Kenya, before the Royal Trio finally returned to the United Kingdom on the 26th of March.

After the Official Welcome that morning, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (wearing the Order of the Royal House of Chakri) and Queen Sirikit (wearing the Thai Fringe Tiara and the Order of the Royal House of Chakri) hosted a State Banquet in honour of the Queen (wearing the Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara and the Order of the Royal House of Chakri in the wrong direction) and the Duke of Edinburgh (wearing the Order of the Garter) at the Royal Palace of Bangkok. Princess Anne (wearing the Halo Scroll Tiara and the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (wearing the Order of the Royal House of Chakri) were also present.

Other events included visits to the Bangkok Dancing School and Ayuthaya’s Bangpain Palace as well as a boat tour, which were followed by a Banquet at the Chakri Throne Hall, hosted by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (wearing the Order of the Royal House of Chakri), Queen Sirikit (wearing her Diamond Tiara and the Order of the Royal House of Chakri), and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (wearing the Order of the Royal House of Chakri) in honour of the Queen (wearing the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara, her Brazilian Aquamarines, and the Order of the Royal House of Chakri) Prince Philip (wearing the Order of the Garter), and Princess Anne (wearing Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara and the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II).

On the final evening, the Queen (wearing the Vladimir Tiara and the Order of the Royal House of Chakri), Duke of Edinburgh (wearing the Order of the Garter), and Princess Anne (wearing the Halo Scroll Tiara and the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II) hosted a Return Banquet in honour of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (wearing the Order of the Royal House of Chakri), Queen Sirikit (wearing her Thai Tiara and the Order of the Nine Gems) and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (wearing the Order of the Royal House of Chakri) on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

  1. I had to smile when I read that the Queen wore her sash backwards. It reminds of the story (which I believe to be true) that the Duke of Edinburgh mistakenly wore The Order of the Leopard instead of The Order of Leopold to the funeral of the late King Baudoin of Belgium. I am sure some dresser was reprimanded! Has anyone else heard this story?
