The Funeral of King Olav V of Norway at Oslo Cathedral on this day in 1991, which followed a Procession from the Royal Palace of Oslo, and was followed by a Procession to the Akershus Fortress. King Olav, nicknamed “Folkekongen” which means “The People’s King,” was greatly mourned by the Norwegian people, who lit hundreds of thousands of candles in the courtyard outside the palace in Oslo.

   

The new King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway led the Norwegian Royal Family and Foreign Royals and Heads-of-State, including Queen Margrethe (cousin), Prince Henrik, Queen Ingrid, and Prince Joachim of Denmark, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, King Baudouin (nephew) and Queen Fabiola of Belgium, Queen Beatrix and Queen Juliana of The Netherlands, Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte of Luxembourg (niece), King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain with the Count of Barcelona, Prince Hans-Adam of Liechtenstein, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan, The Prince of Wales and Princess Royal (cousins), Prince Albert II of Monaco, and Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn of Thailand.

  1. I remember this when it happened. I really liked King Olav. He seemed to be very down-to-earth and friendly. It’s amazing to me that so much time has passed!
