Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom was born on this day in 1844. The eldest daughter and second child of King Christian IX of Denmark and Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel, she was the sister of King Frederick VIII of Denmark, King George I of Greece, Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia and the Crown Princess of Hanover. In 1863, she married the Prince of Wales, the eldest son of the recently widowed Queen Victoria, and due to her mother-in-law’s seclusion, she undertook many duties on behalf of the Queen and became a fashion icon. The couple had six children, including King George V and Queen Maud of Norway, and the Princess tolerated her husband’s many affairs. After becoming the longest serving Princess of Wales, the couple succeeded to the Throne as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1901, reigning until his death in 1910. Queen Alexandra continued her official duties, and in her later years, she hosted her sister, the exiled Dowager Empress of Russia. She passed away at Sandringham in 1925.
