Queen Wilhelmina’s Diamond Trellis Necklace

Today marks the Death Anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who passed away on this day in 1962. To mark the occasion, we are taking a look at one of the most worn pieces of the Dutch Royal Collection, Queen Wilhelmina’s Diamond Trellis Necklace.

A wedding gift from Queen Emma to her daughter Queen Wilhelmina in 1901, the trellis necklace contains one hundred individually set diamonds on three rows of knife-edged bars with the middle row containing the largest diamonds, which can be replaced by pearls or sapphires. Queen Wilhelmina notably wore her wedding gift for her Silver Wedding Anniversary celebrations in 1926.

Queen Wilhelmina’s Diamond Trellis Necklace was often worn by Queen Juliana, in all configurations, even as a tiara. She continued to wear the piece after her abdication, a notable occasion including a return dinner hosted by the King and Queen of Belgium in 1993.

Queen Wilhelmina’s Diamond Trellis Necklace was also been frequently worn by Dutch Princesses, including Princess Irene, Princess Margriet, and Princess Mabel, at Queen Beatrix’s Abdication Dinner in 2013.

The diamond Diamond Trellis Necklace has also been frequently worn by Queen Máxima, at a variety of notable occasions, including the Wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, the Prince of Wales’ 60th Birthday DinnerKing Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Gala, and Prinsjesdag. There is no doubt it will continue to be worn for years to come.

In 2023, the Princess of Ornage wore teh Diamond Trellis Necklace for Prince Christian of Denmark’s 18th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace.
