Princess Sophie of Greece and Hanover passed away on this day in 2001! The youngest daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, she was the sister of Princess Margarita (later Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg)Princess Cecile (later Grand Duchess of Hesse)Princess Theodora (later Margravine of Baden), and Prince Phillip (now the Duke of Edinburgh). Her cousins include King George, King Alexander, and King Paul of Greece, Queen Helen of Romania, Princess Irene, Duchess of AostaPrincess Marina, Duchess of KentPrincess Paul of YugoslaviaPrincess Eugenie of GreecePrince Michael of Greece, Queen Alexandra of YugoslaviaQueen Sofia of SpainKing Constantine II of Greece, and King Michael of Romania. Spending most of her early life in Greece, the family was forced to flee during the Greek Royal Family’s frequent exiles in the 1920s, residing in Paris until she married Prince Christoph of Hesse, becoming the first of her sisters to get married, at the young age of 16. The couple had five children, and remained happily married until his death in a plane crash in 1943, while serving the Nazis in WWII. In 1946, Princess Sophie married Prince George William of Hanover, discovering the Hesse family jewels had been stolen in the process. The couple had three children and were happily married until her death. As the sister-in-law of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Frederica of Greece, Princess Sophie attended a plethora of royal events throughout her life, frequently being seen at Greek Royal events and the Royal Windsor Horse Show, and was a godmother of the Earl of Wessex. She was the last of the Duke of Edinburgh’s sisters to pass away, on this day in 2001.

  1. I’m willing to bet that Prince Philip really misses his sister Sophie. They were the closest in age and she participated in many of the family occasions in Britain. I’m wondering if he keeps up with his nephews, since I’ve seen photos of them on holiday with him and the Queen. We know a lot about the Queen’s children’s cousins on her side, but not much on the Duke’s side even though they’re more numerous. They’re all royal enough, so I think it might be because of their German heritage?
