Royal Visits to Ghana

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will be starting a visit to Ghana later today, as part of a larger Tour of West Africa, and thus we are flashing back to the previous Royal Visits to Ghana-

In 1957, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent attended a series of parades, galas and celebrations as she granted Independence to the then British Colony of Ghana on behalf of the Queen. Ghana became the first majority-ruled African country to join the Commonwealth.

In 1961, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were hosted by President Nkrumah on a 11 Day visit to Ghana, more HERE, which came the year after Ghana had become a Presidential Republic, and the Queen ceased being the Queen of Ghana. The State Visit was dramatized in Season 2 of Netflix’s The Crown.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited Ghana for a three-day visit in the November of 1999, consisting of a meeting with Ghanian regional chiefs at a Durbar and a glittering State Banquet, ahead of attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in South Africa. More recently, Queen Margrethe of Denmark visited Ghana for a State Visit in 2017.
