Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark announced his engagement to Australian Mary Donaldson at a press conference at Fredensborg Castle in Copenhagen, followed by a interview with Comte Etienne Monpezat on this day in 2003. The couple got married in May 2004.

Later that day, Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson appeared on the balcony of the Amalienborg castle to wave to crowds of well-wishers, along with Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik, and Mary’s father and stepmother.

In the evening, Queen Margrethe (wearing the Golden Poppies) and Prince Henrik hosted a Gala Dinner in honour of the engagement of Crown Prince Frederik (in the Order of the Elephant) and Mary Donaldson (wearing her Tahitian Pearl Necklace, an engagement gift from Prince Henrik) at Fredensborg Palace, where Prince Joachim, Princess Alexandra, and members of Mary’s family were also in attendance.
