Princess Alexandra of Kent, representing her cousin, the Queen, granted Independence to the British Colony of Nigeria on this day in 1960, becoming the Federation of Nigeria, retaining Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State and Queen of Nigeria until 1963. Princess Alexandra attended a series of Parades, Ceremonies, and Banquets, the highlight of which were the Handover Ceremony and the first Nigerian Opening of Parliament (at which the Princess wore the glittering Kent Festoon Tiara).

Princess Alexandra remembered her trip to Nigeria decades later, when talking to the Nigerian High Commissioner at a Diplomatic Reception in 2005.

  1. Princess Alexandra is so lovely! She does her job with such aplomb and grace. She’s quite an asset to the British Royal family and to her country. She represents them well!
