Princess Kira of Prussia, also known as Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna, passed away on this day in 1967. The second daughter of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia and Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Edinburgh, the Princess was born in exile in Paris, due to the scandal of her parent’s marriage, after her mother’s divorce from the Grand Duke of Hesse. They returned to Russia in 1910, where she had a privileged childhood, and after the Russian Revolution, spent a few harsh years in Finland. After the execution of the Imperial Family, Grand Duke Kirill became Head of the House of Romanov and proclaimed himself Emperor in Exile, while they lived between France and Germany. In 1938, she married Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, a grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who became Head of the House of Hohenzollern in 1938. The Prince and Princess of Prussia, the de jure Emperor and Empress of Prussia, had seven children and resided in Germany, where the Prince worked with the underground against the Nazis, and was detained by the Nazis but released shortly afterwards. After the war, the couple continued to attend Royal Events, and in the last years of her life, Princess Kira paid little attention to her health. While staying with her brother, she dumped spoonfuls of sugar into her coffee, saying, “God forbid I should eat anything healthy!” That night, she suffered a heart attack and passed away.
