Queen Olga of Greece

Today marks the Anniversary of the Birth of Queen Olga of Greece, who was born on this day in 1851. Born Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia, the daughter of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaievich and Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg. In 1867, she married King George I of Greece, the Danish Prince who just been elected to the Greek Throne, becoming the Queen of Greece at the age of 16. The couple had eight children, and among their grandchildren were  King George II of GreeceKing Alexander of Greece, and King Paul of GreeceQueen Helen of Romania, the Duchess of Aosta, the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Marina, Duchess of KentPrincess Olga of YugoslaviaPrincess Eugenie of Greece, and Prince Michael of Greece among Royals in Greece, Spain, the United Kingdom, Romania, Serbia, and Italy. Queen Olga was immensely popular in Greece, even being appointed Regent after the sudden death of her grandson, King Alexander, and was the only member of the family given a pension by the Republican government during the Royal Family’s exiles. Queen Olga passed away in exile in 1926, and after being initially buried in Rome, she was reinterred in the Royal Cemetery at Tatoi after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1936.
