Swedish Royal Regalia Stolen

1

The Crowns of King Karl IX and Queen Kristina, as well as an Orb from the Swedish Royal Regalia have been stolen from Strängnäs Cathedral on the afternoon of July 31st. The two crowns are burial crowns from 1611, which were originally interred in King Karl IX’s grave but were later exhumed and put on display. After sealing the Regalia, the two suspects were seen fleeing by a motorboat, thus Police are pursuing the thieves by helicopter, boat and cars.

SVT police spokesperson Thomas Agnevik said:

I have talked to a person at the county administrative board that says that it is not possible to put an economic value on this, these are invaluable objects of national interest”.

  1. This is so sad. I guess the Swedish royals are probably too trusting. I don’t think the security guarding these precious artifacts in that church was too strict. It would be great if everyone was respectful of other people’s property, but unfortunately that’s not the case. I hope the thieves haven’t dismantled the crowns and/or melted everything for the gold in them, because I can’t see that anyone could dare buy them as is. Unless it’s like the plot of a very bad “B” movie with some nefarious individual hoarding royal heirlooms somewhere.
