Wedding of Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna of Russia and Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, 1938

The Wedding of Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna (wearing the Prussian Meander Tiara),  daughter of Grand Duke (Emperor) Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia and Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Edinburgh, and Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, son of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany and Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in a Lutheran ceremony at Huis Doorn in The Netherlands on this day in 1938, following a Russian Orthodox ceremony in Potsdam. Prince Louis Ferdinand became Head of the House of Hohenzollern in 1951, and the Prince and Princess of Prussia, the de jure Emperor and Empress of Prussia, had seven children remaining married until her death in 1967. The Prince died in 1994.

Attendees included Kaiser Wilhelm II (grandfather of the groom), Queen Alexandrine of Denmark (maternal aunt of the groom) along with Crown Prince Fredrick and Crown Princess Ingrid, Crown Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (maternal uncle and aunt of the groom), the Duke of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha, and the Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (maternal aunt of the bride) among a host of German Royalty and Nobility.

  1. The Prussian Meander Tiara is one of my favorites! It has a kokoshnik shape and it’s quite large, but it’s not overwhelming because of the trellis design. It looks light and airy, very becoming to the wearer, provided it’s not work too forward on the head. The last person to wear it was the Princess Viktoria Luise for her wedding in 2017, and she wore it far too forward on her head. I find that Princess Sophie of Prussia wore it perfectly for her wedding reception. One can only hope that there will be another occasion to see this beautiful jewel soon!
