Belgium-Canada State Visits

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium will start their 6-day State Visit to Canada later today, and to mark the occasion, we are taking a look at previous State Visits between the two countries. While Canada is a monarchy, the Governor General (the representative of the Queen of Canada), undertakes the majority of the duties of a Head of State, including State Visits.

In 1971, King Baudoin and Queen Fabiola (wearing her Spanish Wedding Gift Tiara) hosted a State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Brussels in honour of the State Visit of Governor-General Roland Michener.

In 1977, King Baudoin and Queen Fabiola went on their own State Visit to Canada, where they met large crowds and even Prime Minister Pierre-Elliott Trudeau, the father of the current Canadian Prime Minster.

And in 2014, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde hosted a Gala Dinner at the Royal Castle of Laeken in honour of a visit by Governor General David Johnston and the Viceregal Consort.

  1. Gosh, Queen Mathilde looked absolutely ravishing in that off the shoulders black dress she wore to the 2014 Gala Dinner. That silhouette becomes her prodigiously! The only thing that could improve her look would be the Seven Provinces tiara, or better still, the Spanish Gift tiara! 🙂

  2. I think those are all excellent choices. I do feel that there is one that might not make happen and that is the dress for the evening event on day 4. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Queen Mathilde in a dress with an uneven hem like that. It would be a stretch for her, I think. But everything else would be great since I think all of you choices are very flattering. I think the first day choices are especially nice! 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you like them! The outfits aren’t necessarily for Queen Mathilde, but the couple are the main characters for a book I am writing! Anyway, I’m waiting for the State Dinner pictures right now, and will soon have the article on Day 1 up!
