The Queen was greeted by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and officials upon arrival at HMNB Portsmouth, where she also met the Princess Royal (Commodore-in-Chief, HMNB Portsmouth). After boarding the ship, the Queen proceeded onto a dias, for the Royal Salute and National Anthem. The Queen inspected the front rank of the Royal Guard, while the Princess Royal inspected the rear rank.

Afterwards, the Commissioning Service commenced with the Captain reading the Commissioning Warrant, the White Ensign being raised, and the Queen making a speech. The commissioning cake (one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen) was cut by the Captain’s wife and the youngest member of the Ship’s Company. A ‘Cheer Ship’ (three cheers for Her Majesty) signaled the end of the formal Commissioning Ceremony.

Afterwards, the Queen and Princess Royal met guests in the Hangar Deck, including members of the Ship’s Company and their families. They also joined the First Sea Lord, the Captain and members of the Ship’s Company at a private lunch on board, before signing the Visitors’ Book and receiving posies.

The Queen wore a purple dress, coat, and hat, pairing her customary Three Strand Pearl Necklace with the Amethyst Bouquet Brooch. The Princess Royal wore Naval Uniform with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Garter, the Star of the Order of the Thistle, and her medals.
