Happy Birthday to Princess Aiko of Japan, the Princess Toshi! The only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, she was born 8 years into her parents marriage, and is the highest-ranking granddaughter of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. Educated at the Gakushuin Kindergarten, Elementary School, and High-school in Tokyo, her interests include writing Kanji characters, calligraphy, jump rope, playing piano and violin, and writing poetry. As a female, Princess Aiko is barred from ascending the Chrysanthemum Throne. However, with the lack of male heirs at the time of her birth, there was a debate to change the household law and allow her to succeed to the Throne. But, after the birth of her cousin, Prince Hisahito of Akishino, in 2006, the proposal was dropped. Personally, I think the changes, which were supported by 82% of the population, may still come, probably after Crown Prince Naruhito’s accession to the Throne. We wish HIH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!
