Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway

Happy Anniversary to Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette Marit of Norway, who got married on this day in 2001. The bride was an unwed single mother and the match created much scandal at home and abroad. However, in the years since, the Crown Princess has been wholly accepted by the people of Norway and is a popular figure. To mark their anniversary, we are taking a look at their wedding-

Crown Prince Haakon waited for his bride at the steps of Oslo Cathedral and the couple walked up the aisle together (a practice common in Scandinavian weddings).

During the hour-long ceremony, the Bishop os Oslo said:

You have not chosen the easiest path, but love has triumphed,

After the ceremony, the couple exited the cathedral, and even kissed for the cheering crowds.

The couple then drove back to the Palace in a vintage 1966 Lincoln Continental convertible, which was also used for the wedding of King Harald and Queen Sonja.

The Crown Prince and Crown Princess then appeared on the Balcony of the Royal Palace of Oslo, along with their families and Marius Borg Høiby (Mette-Marit’s son), where they kissed again for the crowds.

Crown Prince Haakon wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders. The new Crown Princess Mette Marit wore a silk crepe Ove Harder Finseth gown with the Diamond Daisy Tiara, a wedding gift from King Harald and Queen Sonja.

King Harald wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders. Queen Sonja wore a green gown with the Norwegian Emerald Parure and the sash of the Order of St Olav. Princess Martha Louise wore a (whimsical) pink and brown gown with King Olav’s 18th Birthday gift tiara and the sash of the Order of St Olav.  Princess Astrid wore blue gown with Queen Alexandra’s turquoise parure and the sash of the Order of St Olav.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark wore a purple gown with the Baden Palmette Tiara, diamond earrings, riviere, and the sash of the Order of St Olav. Crown Prince Frederik, the Best Man, wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders.

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders. Queen Silvia wore a pale green gown with the 9-Prong Tiara, diamond necklace, earrings, brooch, and the sash of the Order of St Olav. Crown Princess Victoria wore a pink gown with the Baden Fringe Tiara and the sash of the Order of St Olav.  Prince Carl Phillip wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of the Seraphim, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders. Princess Madeline wore a beige gown with the Modern Fringe Tiara, diamond riviere, and the sash of the Order of the Seraphim.

King Constantine of Greece wore White Tie with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders. Queen Anne Marie wore a pink gown and coat with the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, diamond earrings, aquamarine pendant, and the sash of the Greek Order of the Redeemer. Princess Alexia wore a pale green gown with her Diamond Tiara, pearl earrings, ruby brooch, and the sash of the Greek Order of the Redeemer. Carlos Morales Quintana and Prince Nikolaos wore White Tie.

Queen Sofia of Spain wore a pale green gown with her Floral Tiara, diamond necklace, earrings, bow brooch, and the sash of the Order of St Olav. Then Crown Prince Felipe wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders.

The Prince of Wales wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders. The Earl of Wessex wore White Tie. The Countess of Wessex wore a blue gown with her wedding tiara and a pearl choker.

King Albert of Belgium wore Uniform with the sash and star of the Order of St Olav. Queen Paola wore a blue-grey skirt and coat with Queen Elisabeth’s Art Deco Bandeau, her pearl crescent earrings, diamond necklace, and the sash of the Order of St Olav. Then Crown Prince Philippe wore wore Uniform with the sash of the Belgian Order of Leopold.

Then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands wore White Tie with the sash of the Order of St Olav and the insignia of his other orders. Then Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti wore a grey gown with the base of the Antique Pearl Tiara. Prince Constantjin wore White Tie with the Sash of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Princess Laurentian wore a beige gown and coat with the Dutch Ears of Wheat Tiara.

Grand Duke Henri wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Olav and the insignia of his other orders. Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore a pink gown and coat with the Chaumet Choker Tiara, pearl and diamond earrings, two diamond rivieres, and the sash of the Order of St Olav. Prince Albert of Monaco wore Uniform with the sash of the Order of St Charles, his medals, and the insignia of his other orders.

  1. I’ve never liked or understood CP Mette-Marit’s bouquet. Is it all made of flowers and vines? It’s such an odd shape.
