Duke of Edinburgh’s Final Engagement

Buckingham palace has announced that the Duke of Edinburgh will undertake his final solo official engagement before retirement, when he will attend The Captain General’s Parade on August 2nd. Click HERE to learn about his retirement.

The Duke of Edinburgh, as Captain General of the Royal Marines, will attend a Parade to mark the finale of an annual charity event – the 1664 Global Challenge. The Parade will take place on the Buckingham Palace forecourt on Wednesday, 2nd August and will bring The Duke’s programme of public engagements to a conclusion. His Royal Highness may still choose to attend events alongside The Queen from time to time. His Royal Highness has been associated with the Royal Marines for 64 years, when on 2nd June 1953 he was appointed as Captain General in succession to the late King George VI. Since 1953, The Duke of Edinburgh has supported The Royal Marines on many public engagements including most recently at the Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall and a visit to the Royal Marines School of Music in late 2016.

According to Buckingham Palace, the Duke will have carried out 22,219 solo engagements from 1952 to his last on August 2nd.

  1. OMG! This is so sad! I would like for Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II to last forever! I understand it is ridiculous to want such a thing, but I really admire them and wished more people would emulate their dedication and sense of duty- me included! They have been an example to us all. Even now, as he acknowledges that it’s time to go, he’s showing us the way to bow out gracefully. I wish him all the best in his retirement!
