Wedding of the Duke of Gloucester

Happy Anniversary to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who got married on this day in 1972. When Prince Richard of Gloucester married Danish Birgitte van Deurs, the couple expected a life out of the spotlight. However, after the deaths of his father and brother soon after their simple country wedding at Barnwell Church, the couple had to step up and take on a large royal role. Today, they remain one of the Queen’s biggest supports, and the most hardworking members of the family. The Duke and Duchess have three children and reside at Kensington Palace.

The Queen Mother, Prince of Wales, Princess Margaret, Prince Michael of Kent, and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone joined Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester and Prince William of Gloucester (who died in a tragic plane crash six weeks later) as they celebrated the Wedding of Prince Richard of Gloucester and Birgitte van Deurs at St Andrew’s Church in Barnwell, Northamptonshire, followed by a Reception at Barnwell Manor, at which the Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester was also present.
