Wedding of the Duke of Windsor

One of the most controversial royal couples of the past century, former British King Edward VIII wed twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson at the Château de Candé in France on this day in 1937. After a romance which had led the former King abdicate his throne for “the woman I love”, the couple had a small, quiet ceremony, which wasn’t attended by any members of his family. However, despite living in exile for the rest of their lives, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor had a happy marriage and remained devoted to each other until his death in 1972. The Duchess died in 1986. Take a look below at scenes from their wedding day-

While the ceremony was private, the couple agreed to pose for photographers afterwards, outside the Castle.
