Portuguese State Visit to the UK, 1955

Take a look below at scenes from the 1955 Portuguese State Visit to the UK-

President Craveiro Lopes and First Lady Berta Ribeiro of Portugal were welcomed by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh as they stepped off the Royal Barge at Westminster Pier.

Also present at the welcome were Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Afterwards, the Queen and the President got in one carriage, while the Duke of Edinburgh got in another with the First lady, as they were escorted by the Household Cavalry on their way to Buckingham Palace.

On the second evening, the British Government hosted a Gala Performance of Smetana’s Opera The Bartered Bride at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, which was attended by diplomats, socialites, and members of the royal family.

Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (wearing the Kent Festoon Tiara) arrived with her daughter, Princess Alexandra of Kent (wearing Queen Mary’s Crochet Bandeau).

Princess Marie Louise, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, arrived wearing Princess Helena Victoria’s Honeysuckle Tiara.

Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester arrived in her Art Deco Tiara with emeralds and an emerald necklace and brooch.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (wearing her Oriental Circlet Tiara and Parure) arrived with Princess Margaret (wearing the Halo Scroll Tiara). You can also spot Helen, Duchess of Northumberland in her Northumberland Strawberry Leaf Tiara.

Queen Elizabeth II arrived with the President, wearing Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara with the City of London Fringe Necklace and Dorset Bow Brooch.
