Princess of Wales’ Tiaras

Happy Birthday to the Duchess of Cambridge! The Duchess is the wife of the Duke of Cambridge, 2nd in line to the British Throne and grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, and mother of the adorable Prince George and Princess Charlotte. In her almost 6-year tenure as a royal, the Duchess has only worn a tiara five times. In honour of her birthday today, we will take a look at all of the Tiaras worn (but not owned) by the Duchess;

Given as a gift to the Queen Mother from her husband in 1936 from Cartier, the Halo Scroll Tiara was worn by her in the late 1930s. It was an 18th birthday gift to her daughter, Princess(now Queen) Elisabeth, in 1944. She loaned it to Princess Margaret in the 40s and 50s and her daughter, Princess Anne in the 60s and 70s. Queen Elizabeth II famously loaned the Tiara to the Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding in 2011.

Made from a necklace given as a wedding gift to the Queen Mother from her husband in 1923, who wore the piece infrequently. She loaned the tiara to her sister, Lady Elphinstone, for her 1937 coronation. The piece was also loaned to Princess Margaret, and later as a wedding tiara, to her daughter-in-law, Serena, Lady Linley, in 1993. The Queen loaned the piece to the Duchess of Cambridge for the Diplomatic Reception in 2013 and it was worn at the Chinese State Banquet in 2015.

Made by Garrards for Queen Mary in 1914 as a replica of a tiara owned by her grandmother, the Duchess of Cambridge, the Lover’s Knot Tiara was inherited by the Queen in 1953, who wore it often in the early years of her reign. The Tiara was given as a lifetime loan to Diana, Princess of Wales, who complained about the ‘swinging pearls’, and returned to the Queen upon her death in 1997. The Duchess of Cambridge wore Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara for the first time at the Diplomatic Reception in 2015, and has worn it for all her Tiara events, around five, since.
