Happy Birthday to Emperor Akihito of Japan, who turns 83 today. He was accompanied by members of the imperial family on the bullet-proofed balcony of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to wave to well wishers on December 23rd.

Emperor Akihito was joined by Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko on the bullet-proofed balcony of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, to wave to hundreds of well-wishers celebrating the monarch’s 83rd birthday on December 23rd. Emperor Akihito gave a speech thanking the Japanese public for its support following his video message in August indicating his desire to abdicate.
