Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma was born in 1923 in Paris. As the daughter of Prince René of Bourbon-Parma and Princess Margarethe of Denmark, she was related to most of the Royal Families of Europe through her great-grandfather, King Christian IX of Denmark. She married King Micheal of Romania just months after he was exiled by a communist government in 1948, at the Royal Palace of Athens, home of King Micheal’s maternal uncle, King Paul.

After their honeymoon in Greece and Italy, they started an unsuccessful poultry farm in Britain. They relocated to Switzerland in 1956, where they raised their five daughters, Princesses Margarita, Elena, Irina, Sophie and Marie. The King and Queen of Romania led a quiet life in Switzerland, until they were allowed to return to Romania in 1992. Later, the Royal Family was given the use of Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest, while Săvârşin Castle, and Peleş Castle were returned to King Michael. King Micheal and Queen Anne celebrated their diamond anniversary in a grand three-day event in Romania in 2008.
