Christening of Prince Oscar of Sweden

Prince Oscar of Sweden, the newborn son of Crown Princess Victoria was christened at the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on May 27th. There was a significant Swedish Royal turnout for the ceremony, including most of the children, though understandably, Prince Alexander was absent.

The ceremony, officiated by Archbishop Antje Jackelén, was steeped in tradition. The Prince was baptised with water that came from a special spring on the island of Öland, over a silver font that dates from the early 18th century. During the service, both Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, the Godparents, delivered readings. The godparents also gathered around Prince Oscar, who is third-in-line to the Swedish throne, and held their hands above his head as a sign of a blessing. Crown Princess Victoria is very close to her cousins the heirs of Denmark and Norway, and has served as a godmother to their children. Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway served as Godparents to Prince Oscar, while their spouses served as Godparents to Princess Estelle. The other Godparents were Princess Madeleine, aunt of the Prince Oscar, Hans Astrom, cousin of Prince Daniel, and Oscar Magnuson, cousin of Crown Princess Victoria.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, King Carl XVI Gustav presented his grandson with the sash of the Order of the Serephim.  After the service, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel presented their little Prince, who was wearing his new sash and order, to well-wishers outside the chapel. The party then moved on for a reception and private lunch in the palace.

The royal children misbehaved often during the ceremony, much to the annoyance of their parents, and to the amusements of the others. Princess Estelle got bored frequently, and started to get fretful.Princess Leanore, whose antics are much remembered from her brother christening, fell of her chair, and ran from one side to the other throughout the ceremony. Prince Nicholas remained amiable throughout the ceremony with his toothbrush, but did cry a few times.
